The endemic ʻōhiʻa lehua tree and blossom are an integral part of our culture. It is mentioned throughout history moʻolelo and ʻoli. One moʻolelo tells a story of ‘Ōhi‘a, a handsome man who caught the attention of Pele, but was in love with a woman named Lehua. Enraged with jealousy, Pele turned ‘Ōhi‘a into a twisted tree. Crying to the gods for a way to be with her lover, Lehua was turned into a beautiful flower, forever to be an adornment on the twisted tree. It is said to never pick a lehua without permission, as it rains in sadness when she is picked from her ‘ōhi‘a.

Made from absorbent light-weight suede microfiber that's impossibly soft to the touch yet extremely durable and fast drying, these stylish, microbe resistant, 100% suede microfiber towels are sand-resistant, a great way to dry off after a morning surf session, a hard workout at the gym, working in the field, staying dry on the snow slopes or a simple topper for your yoga mat. The calendar is so well done. I sent one to my grandson who moved to Texas for a job, and one to a dear friend who has lived in Hilo for 50 years and recently moved to Washington State to be close to her children. I wanted them to have a daily reminder of what they left behind.
