MO‘OLELO: WAHINE. Before European contact, Hawai‘i had a different social structure, but with the arrival of missionaries, women’s roles became more restricted under Christian influence. Despite this, Hawaiian women were often strong and intellectual, both in myth and reality. Goddesses like Papahanaumoku, Pele, and Laka, along with powerful women like Queen Ka‘ahumanu and Queen Lili‘uokalani, defied patriarchal norms. Pele, for example, was a fierce goddess of fire, known for her strength and outspokenness, while Laka taught the sacred art of hula, traditionally performed by men. Queen Ka‘ahumanu played a key role in political changes after her husband's death, and Queen Emma fought for the rights of native Hawaiians, even establishing the Queen’s Medical Center. Princess Pauahi Bishop left a legacy through Kamehameha Schools, focusing on education and the preservation of Hawaiian culture. Queen Lili‘uokalani, Hawai‘i’s last monarch, fought against U.S. annexation and continued to advocate for her people even after her overthrow. These women, along with other mana wahine, defied the expectations of their time and shaped Hawai‘i’s history with their strength, leadership, and resilience.
