Aloha Modern Founders

With decades of dedicated professional experience, Mālia Ka’aihue, PhD, has become a respected figure in operations, business development, cultural planning, and strategic development. Her journey began with a profound interest in the rich cultural heritage of Hawai‘i, where she delved into the mo‘olelo, or storytelling traditions, that form the heart and soul of many spaces throughout the islands.


Reyn Mukawa, graphic, designer and architect based in Honolulu, found his passion for culturally focused design with a deep understanding of the significance of architectural storytelling. He joined WCIT a design firm renowned for its commitment to cultural sensitivity in architectural projects.

Recognizing a shared passion for preserving and sharing the stories of Hawai‘i, Mālia and Reyn envisioned a venture that could transcend the boundaries of traditional preservation efforts. In their collaboration, Aloha Modern was born—a Hawaiian lifestyle company that serves as a testament to their shared values. Grounded in Mālia’s extensive experience in cultural planning and Reyn’s design and production expertise, Aloha Modern became a platform for thoughtfully crafted products that bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. The products, meticulously curated and designed, reflect the duo’s dedication to ensuring that the mo‘olelo remains a living, breathing part of Hawaiian identity.

Ilihia Huddleston

Poʻo of Operations

Ilihia wears many hats as Aloha Modern’s Poʻo of Operations, blending her organizational expertise with her passion for Hawaiian culture. She assists with marketing initiatives and strategy, coordinates the launch of new products, and ensures smooth logistics for shipping. Ilihia also manages Aloha Modern’s ambassador program, and takes charge of organizing and running markets. Her leadership and versatility are key to keeping Aloha Modern’s operations flowing seamlessly while staying true to its mission. Ilihia has her B.A. in Hawaiian Knowledge from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

Micah DeSoto

Ocean Clinic Coordinator | Surfer | Father

Micah, 26, is a surfer, navigator, and waterman. Micah is an engaged community member and serves as an Ocean Clinic Coordinator for the non-profit, Nā Kama Kai, where he spearheads all event planning and coordination.

Puamakamae DeSoto

Professional Surfer | College Student

19-year-old Pua is a professional surfer who holds 9 national titles and 12 state titles while balancing school, relationships, and cultural advocacy. Currently, Pua attends Pepperdine University. 

Kalānōweo DeSoto

Surfer | Student

Kalā, 17, is a talented young surfer, and has made significant strides in the surfing world, Beyond surfing, Kalānōweo is passionate about skateboarding and cherishes time with his ʻohana.
