MO‘OLELO

KAUA‘I: Poetically Kaua‘i is referred to as “Manokalanipō” after the ancient chief who was largely responsible for elevating Kauaʻi’s ancient society to sophisticated heights of advancement and productivity. Manokalanipō has the characteristic honor of having had his name as a nickname to the island over which he ruled, and in epical and diplomatic language it was ever after known as “Kauai-a-Manokalanipō.” No foreign wars disturbed Kukona’s nor Manokalanipō’s reign, and it is remembered in the legends as the golden age of Kaua‘i. Today, people of Kaua‘i proudly proclaim that their island was never conquered over the centuries, even when larger armies attempted to do so.

Traditional Hawaiian life was based on the ahupua'a system of land management. An ahupua'a, or land division, was typically wedge-shaped and extended from the top of the mountain into the outer edge of the ocean reef. ʻŌiwi maintained an agricultural system that contained two major classes: irrigated and rain-fed systems. In the irrigated systems, mostly grew taro (kalo), and in the rain-fed systems, they grew mostly ʻuala (sweet potatoes), yams, and dryland taro in addition to other small crops. ʻŌiwi believed that the land, the sea, the clouds and all of nature had a certain interconnectedness, which is why they used all of the resources around them to reach the desired balance in life. Sustainability was maintained by the konohiki and kahuna—priests, who restricted the fishing of certain species during specific seasons. Over time, through battles and political alliances, boundaries have moved or combined with some with the same names divided even further throughout history.
